According to Vanguard, the government has found Jega to be uncooperative
and is seeking to replace him with a less independent-minded person to
ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected into office.
According to reports, the Presidency has begun to shop for a replacement for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega.
According to Vanguard,
the government has found Jega to be uncooperative and is seeking to
replace him with a less independent-minded person to ensure that
President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected into office.
The first step of the plot was to secure the postponement of the elections
before eventually booting out Jega who was “given the job on a platter
of gold by the president’s men” but is now refusing to bend to the will
of his “masters.”
There have also been rumours
that Jega might be asked to proceed on terminal leave before the new
date for the elections, since his tenure ends on June 30, 2015, and an
acting chairman appointed.
The Cable reports
that there is currently an uneasy relationship between the Presidency
and INEC due to Jega’s admission that the service chiefs were
responsible for the poll shift.
An official connected to the Presidency told the online news platform:
“Jega
was not sincere at all. The collection of PVCs was to end last Saturday
and 23 million cards were yet to be distributed. Why was Jega not man
enough to admit they would have bungled the elections if the dates had
remained unchanged?”
“…Jega has cleverly gone to tell the whole world that it was the security agencies that forced him to change the dates,” the official reportedly added.
The INEC Chairman announced on Saturday, February 7, that the commission was forced to postpone the polls
because the necessary security agencies had said they wouldn’t be
available to provide protection if the elections were held in February.
